Omni Instrumentation & Electrical Services, Inc. recently completed a large process controls project at a 125,000 sq. ft. facility that included installation of eight security cameras and thirty-nine process monitoring cameras. Omni worked closely with the IT/AV systems integrator that provided the design for the new camera system, which included a closed-circuit television system.
The power over ethernet (PoE) cameras were located strategically throughout the facility to allow extensive, 24/7 monitoring of all processes, many of which were not easily physically-accessible to plant personnel. This included floor-level and elevated conveyors, tanks, mixing areas, and receiving and loading docks. The cameras allowed operators to watch out for anomalies so that corrections could be made before interruptions could occur. The CCTV system stored recordings for thirty days so that when problems did occur, the video could be reviewed to determine the cause.
There were five large monitors provided. Three were in the control room and one was for security purposes. Two 65-inch monitors in the product receiving and sorting area focused on the pre-mixing equipment. Operators could easily view the product mixing on the monitors to spot problems and quickly stop the process and clear the issue to keep things moving smoothly.
Each camera was provided an IP address and wired back to the associated patch panel. All Cat 6 cables were inspected, labeled, tested, and verified not to exceed maximum allowed lengths. Patch cords were installed and ready for the systems integrator to configure the switches and test all of the cameras. Omni assisted the systems integrator in adjusting the cameras as needed. The security and process CCTV system was commissioned with the client and their operators were trained how to operate the system.
